Tzu Chi’s Medical Mission can be traced back to the early years of Tzu Chi’s charity work. I used to travel to various parts of Taiwan, twice a year, to visit the poor. During this period, I tried to address the causes of poverty. I discovered that many had become poor as the result of illness. In an attempt to break the vicious cycle of illness and poverty, I resolved to build a hospital.
